Infidelity and Affairs

While some might feel ashamed or embarrassed for considering staying with a partner who has been unfaithful, many relationship experts believe infidelity has the potential to strengthen a relationship post-affair. While there is a substantial amount of mental, emotional and psychological work to be done, with the right therapist and commitment to couples therapy, couples are able to overcome cheating if there is a shared desire to do so.

Infidelity within a relationship can be a traumatic event that may cause lasting damage if not worked through appropriately in a professional setting. Through marriage counseling, a trained therapist is helpful in re-creating the foundation of a relationship, whereas “the relationship” is treated as the client, to address the possibility of healing post-affair. Affairs can bring about feelings of shock, insecurity, anger, betrayal and abandonment. However, finding a therapist who you feel is a good fit for you and your partner, can provide a better understanding through empathy, renewed trust and intimacy, improved communication and reduced symptoms of post- traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Full Circle Counseling in New Orleans focuses on couples therapy to help both partners understand how the affair came to happen, identify pre-existing problems in the relationship, reflect on both partners’ involvement and accountability, and address unresolved childhood wounds. Through these practices, together we will reignite intimacy, get in touch with our own individual goals and shared values, rebuild trust, and prioritize healthy communication through emotional vulnerability.
